I would also suggest bonding,, and of course an IJCSA membership Yes If you do the following that you stated your in business.

Here in Kingman Arizona, we applied for city license and that is how we got a DBA. Didn't "register" anywhere with anyone. Perhaps it is different in other states. With our license we were able to get necessary bonds, open a checking account, join the local chamber of commerce..... When you get to where you are large enough to play with the BIG BOYS, then buy. Insurance is quite costly...... at this point you will have to hire employees, pay in the payroll taxes, and buy workmans comp insurance too..... long way down the road!

Hi Hazel! First, welcome aboard IJCSA! I've just started in the business myself, and I'll second the endorsement of an IJCSA membership - a majority of the answers to questions I had, and continue to have, I was able to find the answers on these forums. Now for your questions :-) DBA stands for "Doing Business As" Like royalet above said, it's a sort of registered name, and it defines how your business is known to the world. There are small differences in how they're assigned and handled, as Natalie mentions in a post above. Crowz obtained theirs through their city, Kingman, Arizona. In my case, I am in St. Louis, Missouri -- yet my DBA was done through the Office of the Secretary of State. It was quite easy, I just completed an online form, and paid $7.00, for the DBA, which here is officially called a "Ficticious Name." You might wish to contact a Chamber of Commerce, or your City Hall for the specifics in your city and state. I am a disciple of the mantra "There's no such thing as too much insurance." I highly recommend insurance and bonding. You definetly want to shop around for the best rates. Also, be certain that any agent you select is knowledgeable regarding the type and amount of bond appropriate to a janitorial service company -- some agents can be clueless, I discovered. I also discovered it to be, in my case, an issue where IJCSA membership paid off -- the best quote, coverage, and information came from agent for Hartford, who's listed on the IJCSA sponsors page ( www.ijcsa.com/pages/113/index.htm). Cheers! John

Hello everyone, I am fairly new to all of this. I just moved out to Illinois from New England. I worked for a Residential cleaning company out there, & could not believe what she got for fees, so I decided to try starting my own. I lucked out because a good friend runs a reality company and needed cleaners for the new listings, plus I think there is a shortage here. My flyers have not done so well, and I was getting nervous so I added courier service to survive until I have more accounts. I am amazed at what these companys pay to have you deliver parts ect... Anyway, I have gotton alot of questions answered here and I just wanted to say Thank You to everyone who helps. It is really kind & I greatly appreciate it. Most of the time I don't even have to post a question, it is usually already answered somewhere.

FANTASTIC CLEANING SERVICE: it takes a long time to establish a cleaning company that actually makes money. most cleaning services go out of business within three years. if you need to pay your bills, get a full time regular job to make ends meet and look for more cleaning jobs on the side. do everything yourself and don't hire out until you can't walk from being so tierd. AND... make those cold calls! get some scripts with rebuttles and make call after call after call after call until you get a bite. work will never jump in your lap until you you have been in business for many years. most importantly.....stick around and LEARN! i know i do. read these post here provided to you by members all over the world and find answers for yourself. you are a cleaning company owner and are expected to know the answers so start reading. AND... DON'T EVER GIVE UP!

Great Advice Mike!, also please note after ten years in business, jobs dont jump in your lap. Though you handle them more accordingly, and you also handle the customer. Think of your business as a political campaign. You need a good web presence, a good paper trail, people out there in front of the people, promos, phone calls, looking for supporters, emails, newsletters.. eveything you can possibly do and afford putting your name into the public..Think of your market area as your election territory, and the office you work out of campaign headquarters. Door to door is great, mailers are great. But it does not stop when you send out or deliver 100 flyers, follow up. If you mail 100 flyers where did they go...keep records. Then go to that area and walk in to the places you mailers went to and say did you receive our mailer.. your business is your personal campaign, daily your running for an election that never ends till the day you retire.

It is always hard to get started. I think especially when the economy is not doing so well. Hang in there and while not working , learn as much as you can about the buisness. Perhaps focus on new buisnesses that are in your area. Network. While in your start up phase and learning phase make contacts. Join local networking groups. Get you name out there so when things do pic up , you will be at the top of your game.
