Have you ever stripped a new vct. New tile comes with a pre coat of finish from the factory. This new coat needs to be stripped off so that the new coat will bond to the tile. If you do not strip it off then there is a chance that the new finish will flake or start coming loose after it has dried. We always ask that tile be down for at minimum two weeks.
I stripped a new floor a couple days ago. It had been down for four weeks. Everything appeared to be OK until we started to put down new finish. At that time we notice that when you walk on the tiles that the stripper/rinse water was squeezing out around the edges creating a mess. We showed it to owner after we applied first coat. I told him that it may be that the glue was bad; the floor was dirty when installed; or that something else had caused this other than our process. He said to go ahead and apply the rest of finish. They are going to continue mopping anything that comes out while they are open for business. We are hopeful that the problem will stop after a couple of days and we will try to repair damage to finish with buffing and another coat of finish.
This tile was laid on plywood floor by a professional company. I have only had this to happen to me a couple of times in 24 years. One of those times was also where tile was laid on plywood and the other time was due to bad glue . I know if there is dried clue on top of a tile our stripper will not take it off, we have to scrape it loose. I know some think that the stripper actually causes the glue to dissolve but I don't think so . I lay full blame on the glue or process using in laying down the tile. But that is my opinion with out any scientific/ factual evidence to prove other wise.
How would you look at this event? What would you do? I am still charging the same amount as quoted and told the client that worse case , his tile may start coming loose from floor. Thanks for any comments concerning this. Dan
