Hi everybody, it's been awhile since I've been here. One question, I have a job to bid on and it requires cleaning ceramic tile to bring back a nice shiney look. I've never worked with ceramic tile just with VCT. It is in an office building at the enterance, not sure on the color but what kind of machines or chemicals are used and safe for finish?
Please email me at clean05@mts.net ASAP
PS What would a person charge per sq. ft. and does one need to refinish this type of floor or just scrub it well?

Ceramic tile should not require putting a finish on. It comes in dull finish or shiny finish. It is not recommened to put a topical coating on it. Are you sure it is ceramic tile? Does it have wax/finish on it? There are specialty tools to clean ceramic tile and grout with such as the sx12 but requires high psi from a carpet cleaning machine or pressure washer. Chances are that if new to this you probably do not have those tools. If it has been waxed you can strip it off the same way you would vct tile , if it is ceramic tile. It is hard to do but can be done. Price will depend on what has to be done and how much there is to be done. You can clean ceramic tile and grout with cleaners that are designed for such. One is alkaline and the other is an acid type. We always start with alkaline and if that does not work then we use acid that is if there is no wax on the tile. If it is a dull finish and they demand a finish be put on then tell them you will not gaurantee that the finish will bond to the surface and they may have to pay you to come back and strip it off.

Hi Dan, I haven't seen the floor yet but the owner said it is ceramic, not sure if it is glazed or has had a finish put on after but my supplier was saying to use a higher pH cleaner like Butchers "Hot Springs" or Spartan "Shinline" and maybe my little swing machine with a brush attachment.
He also mentioned if someone had put an after factory finish on it I'd have to strip it first. Can you tell just by looking if it had a finish put on it? Thanks!

Is anything on the tile/grout now other than dirt? If it is just dirty you can probably use an alkaline cleaner. Scrub it , suck it up , rinse it, suck it up again. Repeat until clean. If grout does not come clean you may have to go to an acid cleaner. As far as disinfectant, I am not sure. Have never been asked to sanitize a ceramic tile floor. There are several products in alkaline and acid designed for ceramic tile and grout cleaning. I would suggest that you check with sponsors here first. There is also a grout brush which is about 1 inch wide and 5 inches long that attaches to a handle. It works very well on grout lines.

www.steam-brite.com/store/hydroforce-sx12-tile-cleaning-tool-p-4986.htmlIt is called sx12. It is a great tool as well as the sx7. It does take high pressure and could even be used with a pressure washer and modified couplings. I bought mine at interlink supply but this site has a lower price. There are other simular machines on the market as well. In addition to this tool there are also several hand wands, spinners and large wands designed for ceramic tile and grout. I have not checked with IJCSA sponsors. Perhaps they have similar tools they would like to post info about here.
