I want to start hiring help for my residential cleaning business. I clean 2-3 houses a day, and have people wating for me to call and give them an estimate. I get all my clients by word of mouth. Business is good! Do you think there's more profit in the commercial cleaning than the residential? Or should I do both?

Well we try and do only commercial, so I can't answer your question with any experience. However as my father said find your niche and do it. I like commercial because I pick my time. Most of our clients give us keys so if we get their at 7:00 pm or 3:00 am and do the job right they are happy. when I did a few houses I got tired of the homeowner demanding a certain time to be there. We never did maid service just carpet and floors, but the constant BS of and actual schedule didn't work for me. I might add that at the time Jamie and I had other 9 - 5 jobs so the day schedule didn't work for us. But it seems you found your niche 2-3 house a day so thats where I'd stay.

I use to do residential and commercial. I do sticktly residential now. I found that the residential was what I was best at and I got tired of the nights and weekends with commercial cleaning. It all depends on what is best for you. What you do best and what hours you want to work. It is best if you stick to one or the other and concentrate on that. I am a morning person myself. I like to rise early so the residential works best for me. There is a lot of money to be made in residential home cleaning. I have supported myself for years on doing only residential. Patti

I knew when I posted you would say that Kevin. Your right. There are pros and cons with each (residential and commercial cleaning). I guess I like the residential the best because its more personal. I like getting to know the families (kids, grandparents and pets). But your right. If you can swing both its best to do both even if you have to subcontract some of the work. Patti

We do both residential and commercial, but more commercial. We do not do weekends, period. Commercial jobs are done between 2am and 8am, M-F. Residentials are 730am to noon mostly. Carpet is done whenever the customer wants, pretty much, M-F.

In my area we charge a $22.00 to $40.00 an hour for office or residential cleaning. My employees cost me about $14.00 hr with all payroll taxes. I have a couple of women that work for me doing part time office cleaning at night. In return for their being dependable;responsible workers I refer all residential cleaning to them. They charge $10.00 to $15.00 hour (which is normally the pay here for residential.) Needless to say they are covered up. They appreciate my help so much that I don't ever have to worry about them quitting me part time which is a hard position to fill with quality workers. I now need to look for a third worker to do part time commercial cleaning so I can have someone else to refer residential to.
