One of your staff or you personally broke something, in a customers house. How do you handle the entire situation?

I broke a very expensive wine glass once. I told them to take the cost out of my pay. She said accidents happen, and did not. I guess it depends on the person.

We have broke very few things over the years. They were just little inexpensive items, but I either leave a note or call the client to let them know and ask them the cost to replace and I will send a check, but everyone just said it wasn't important. Once I broke a plastic bathroom garbage can and left the money on the table for it with a note and the next time I cleaned thay gave the money back. Patti

I broke a metal picture frame one time. I was dusting the mantle. The picture was just propped up there without a stand. It fell to the hardwood floor. The frame broke, the glass didn't. I immediately took it to the client and told her what had happened.
So far, all that has ever been broken during a cleaning was small, inexpensive items. We offer to replace them, but no one has taken us up on the offer.

If small items, most people understand - similar to what everyone has already mentioned.
One of the last questions I always ask while touring each room is "is there anything we should not touch because it's irreplaceable?". Then I ask again just before I provide my estimate. I then remind them that we clean everything in all the rooms; we only exclude those items that we have been told not to touch.
We get to a new client house and in one room there was a wall shelf that went across one wall, close to the ceiling. There were colored objects on this shelf (can't remember exactly what they were). I'm cleaning in another room and I hear a crash. One of the items was broken. I knew the owner had not excluded these items and therefore expected it to be just a few dollars.
When I review this with the owner, she replies "Oh; I didn't think you would clean up there! I collect them and they're very expensive".
Thank goodness "very expensive" turned out to be only $175 and not $1,175.
