Just got back from a trip to middle Missouri. (Family get together long over due)
I knew it was off the beaten path, did not know it was 60 miles from the nearest tavern, 30 miles from the nearest restaurant, roughly 30 miles from the grocery story. (and they all close at 6:30 pm)
Differences that may be major to extreme from our convenience store on every corner around here, and high speed internet. I almost forgot what dial up internet was. Did have a day to explore and it seems many people of Missouri are happy and friendly. I guess the major thing I noticed is when you go shopping you go shopping for two weeks of groceries. The big night in town is what high school football team or baseball team is coming to town, usually started with tailgaiting and followed up with snacks and drinks at some families house after. Simple sane solutions for family entertainment. Nothing is extravagant, but everything is real good (especially the food)
Property taxes are anywhere from $60 a month to the extreme for the rich folk of $120 , if you have under 70 acres of land with at least four or five lakes on it, you don`t have much. Property taxes are so low as there are not many county, city services. Your on your own pretty much, no garbage pick up, no city water, no city services much to speak of. There is a fire department and police department, but most folk handle things on their own down there though. No city permits needed if you want to build something, If you got the money you build what you want. If you ever decide to sell it though it has to be up to code. Closest medical service, 40 minute drive.
One thing which was a big difference was no city lights, at night a brief moment of no clouds and every star and planet seems in reach. Very peaceful place, great place to get away from it all, great place to raise a family.
Hard to believe the changes you can experience, an hour and a half plane ride, and five hours in the car. Some changes for the better I think. Very hard to match the sense of community one feels there as everyone knows the other, and has already or willing to lend a helping hand.
