You have to check with your particular state to find out if a licence is needed. What kind of cleaning business are you looking to start? What do you have for seed money? If you are planning on hiring employees you must pay workmans comp. in addition to having liability insurance. Take a look around theses board and you will find answers to your questions;)

Welcome to the Forum! Here is a helpful link to get you started: www.irs.gov/businesses/small/index.htmlThere are many posts here with lots of great information. Our offices are in the County ordinance, so we are not required to have a license, but we have one anyway for business and advertising purposes. License for sole proprietor or partnership here is only $20.00 yearly. It makes a company credible. To join our local chamber of commerce we have to have city license and bonding minimum. Natalie

Total differences from State to State. You need to check out your local county or State. If you need just a cleaning license and operates only in State then its just a regular cleaning license. If it is a Janitorial that includes Commercial and Residential with a more broader terms it might be best to check out your local Labor and Licensing Division. Reason for this is that with more broader definition would be an offset with your liability insurance as compared to the plain cleaning. The more Services you choose the more liability you are involved. But it wont cost you much so dont be scared. There are $ 500.00 + a year and broken down in 11 months + 1 month downpayment. Check out with Kevin through Service Magic. It would be advisable to get a $ 500,000 on your first year and as you move on increase it a million in the next year. Bonding also is later. Shop for Prices for Workers Comp when someone is gonna work with you. Im telling you that having your own business would be a burden but its gonna pay off as you move on in the right direction.
