I was browsing a coupon book last night that has local coupons & offers in it for local stores. I saw one for $5 extra dollars when you donate plasma. You get $25 per donation, which can be done 8 times a month, which ends up being $200 a month in ALMOST free money. The only catch is you donate your plasma. After seeing the coupon it hit me: I could donate plasma and in one month, pay my $100 yearly bonding fee and 1/3 of my yearly insurance fee. By the time I get another bill in the mail for insurance, I should have enough clients so I wouldn't have to worry about paying insurance again, and if so, I could just donate more plasma. I feel like a genius (haha, j/k). It does seem like a great idea though. So, if you're capable of donating plasma, I think it could be worth it if the extra money can help out the business. I like the idea because I was thinking I should get a PT job for a month to pay for my insurance, but why when I could do something that will save lives and at the same time, get paid too? Just an idea. I will be calling this week to see about donating. -Nicole

Nicole- I remember the good old days of donating plasma when I was in college. However, I used the extra money to pay for "night's out on the town". I also went when I was in a very desperate/dire situation financially. I found that going to donate was one of the most humilating things to do just so I could keep my lights on and food in my tummy. You seem to have a positive outlook for earning the extra cash to pay for insurance while helping others with your plasma. For me - I pray to God that I will never have to go back to selling my plasma for money. Things to keep in mind when you go to donate - 1) they test your first then allow you come back to donate if you pass the screenings. 2) make sure you have at least 6 hours for the first visit (it's like waiting in line at the DMV or the county assistance office- all kinds of folks 3) Bring a book 4) For your 2nd visit expect to be there at least 2-3 hours..lines of people of course. 5) Make sure that you have at least an hour after you donate to sleep/rest - donating can drain your strength. Please keep in mind this was my experience and I hope that your's will be more positive! Best of Luck! Kathleen

All I know is this : I went to donate my plasma at a place in downtown Cincinnati. And as I sat there and looked at the other people packed like sardines in this waiting room - I began to wonder if the $25 was worth catching a nasty disease. Plus I heard it's kinda painful, more so than just giving blood.

Yes -Kim - it can be painful, depending on who is inserting the thick needle in your arm. These places are heavliy regulated and do practice safe/clean methods for donation. That was the only thing that was comforting to me when I went to donate.
Also, two more things I forgot to mention: 1) Don't bring any valuables. 2) After doing this donating of plasma for over a month, I was left with a nice permenant reminder of my financial problems in the form scars similiar to track marks of a junkie.
Nicole, please remember this was my experience and I certainly hope that you do have a positive experience. Best of Luck! Let us Know how it went!

Last time I donated blood was in high school, my Junior year I think. Anyways, it was by Heartland Blood Centers and they usually bring in the newbies to do the sticking.
I had donated twice before and never had any problems. The last time I was left with a 3 week long bruise and two weeks of pain. I seriously looked like an abuse victim in my right arm.
