I talked with a commercial cleaning service owner yesterday. This is a real good example of improper planning, and what I would call no sales or industry experience. Been in business now roughly 5 months, has not received a single job. So I asked, what are you doing for advertising, answer: business cards. It amazes me, some of the stories. People taking their life savings, pensions, retirement plans and starting a service. Timing and Sales Work is everything. A good example would be the yellow pages. If you started a business in my area today, you would not be able to get into the yellow pages until July 2008, so in the meantime you had better have a strategy for cold calling and direct sales, that can create direct income, while waiting for or creating other advertising. Please before you start a service. A good understanding in sales and marketing, is worth more than any janitorial experience you have. You can learn the janitorial and cleaning as you go.
