this is kinda of a dum question but here goes. When bidding by square foot how do you figure the square foot of a building.

first let me say there is NO dumb question. You measure the length and multiply it by the width. figure out how many square feet the length of the property is and do the same w/ the width. multiply them together and you will get your square feet. it is best to measure the square feet of a building w/ a rolling square foot measuring device or a laser device. also, if the building is cut up a lot- measure the square footage in small sections to be more accurate. you can buy a rolling measuring device at your local janitorial store. i hope i was clear and said this right....(yawn) gnight.

Hardware store have the measuring wheel also. We usually do the same measure overall length / width. If there are many areas that will not be cleaned we will do a breakout for those areas. If the contact seems to have little time or wont let me go on my own & measure each area then I will do an overall & take out like 10% for walls or more for unused areas. Rarely do I take their word on sq ft

Most of the time a client will not tell the truth about sq ft so I always measure it my self. Perfect example was this morning I had to bid on a carpet cleaning job. The lady said it was 3500 sq ft total, and to deduct the tile in 4 bathrooms, kitchen and waiting room. I measured 8897 sq ft plus the other rooms, she said she was only authorized to pay for 3500 sq ft... I said no problem when I get to 3500 sq ft I'll stop. She said I was nut's, I told her to go back to school and lean how to do simple math. Before I could get out of the building she said OK you can do the job. I laughed and said no way you're nuts.
I figure if she tried to scam me then, she definitely would try and not pay or complain about the job
