How did you get into the cleaning business? I decided to start a cleaning business because I was tired of working 60 plus hours a week for someone else. I was a shipping and receiving supervisor. I wanted to be my own boss and have control of my working hours. Cleaning was something that I was always very good at. So I used some savings to get by on until the cleaning business took off and went for it.

After cleaning for other people for a while I decided I was sick of being under paid and wanted to do it my self. Plus now I have a bit of flexibility in my schedule to do what I want to do (hang out with my son) and I can set my own hours ect... I love cleaning when im getting paid to do it.

I too had gotten sick of being unpaid for my cleaning for companies. I have been in this line of work for 15-20 years now always dreamed of opening a cleaning business and finally did it in March of this year.

I was a software developer for 18 years doing consulting work. When the market went soft in California, I decided I was burned out and needed to make a change. I first started and sold a mail store. Decided I didn't like retail customers. I started a cleaning business because I knew what the customers wanted and I knew the franchises were no competition with the bad cleaning they did. I started the business doing the cleaning myself and quickly hired a partner. I had no problem getting customers once the word got out. And it helped that I have a little OCD personality and have to make everything perfect!

I used to operate movie theatres, then realized the cleaning service was making more than me, I also grew up in a very sterile clean home. My mom was always cleaning, it brushed off on me. I love cleaning and restoration, making things new again.

We started our cleaning business when my husband had his hours cut at his regular job. He had cleaning experience from cleaning the Post Office in our town. The plan was for him to just take on enough jobs to make up for his lost hours.
It wasn't very long before he was able to quit his job and just do cleaning. Now I have quit my job and do cleaning as well. We are now in the position where we will be doing a lot more managing with employees doing most of the cleaning for us.
That wasn't the plan, I was a medical adminstrative assistant working for the same doctor for eight years. However, my medical background was what opened the door for us to specialize in medical office cleaning. Our medical clients trust us because they know that having worked in a medical office, I know the specialized cleaning needed as well as understand bio-hazards and privacy issues.
Thanks for asking such an interesting question.

I was a nurse recruiter. I went to work one day and there was a pad lock on the door. Can you believe that.... no warning or anything . So then I was forced to take a low paying as being a private sitter. My dad does commercial cleaning and I helping him since I was a kid. So I decided to do what I love.I can clean with no problems it's the business part that I'm still learning. BTW... I recently quit that job as a sitter to focus on my business its scary but I feel like I did the right thing.

John & I moved to Kingman to buy into his dad's business, Andy's Dry Cleaners. After 3 months here and still no deal signed, we decided to start our own business with what was left of the proceeds from the sale of our home in Reno. Unfortunately, John had spent a lot of it on repairs and replacement of equipment at Andy's, so we had to find something that we could do from home, had $5000.00 or less start-up cost, and both experience with. John was in the Navy, so knows how to "swab the deck", strip/wax, and scrub a toilet with a toothbrush, LOL! I grew up the only clean sibling out of 4 in a filthy home. Both parents worked and I spent most of my time cleaning up after everyone. In 1986 I went to Bryman College for Certified Medical Assistant and worked in labs & clinics of So. Cal for many years. When I moved to Nevada I got my CNA and worked long-term care for a while. From 2001 to 2004 I worked as a private caregiver for a lady with dementia and Alzheimer's. Housekeeping/cleaning was part of that too, as is almost all medical. So that's it.........

I fell into the cleaning business by mistake.
A few years ago I was burnt out from being the Biz Manager at an electrician's company - 2 years of 60 hour weeks had me pulling out my hair! I went to a temp agency looking for easy jobs that didn't involve much thinking. They placed me as a receptionist in a Corporate Relocation company that did housecleaning for their clients. The owner of the company hired me as their Ops Manager within a week of being back from vacation. So all of the sudden I was managing 7 cleaners and 1 carpet guy. Since I am not a stay-behind-my-desk kindda manager, I would go out and supervise the jobs in person and help the cleaners out when they were in a bind. They taught me LOTS.
When the bubble burst here in CA, I lost my job. A year later an investment company hired me to START a cleaning company for them. So, in essence, I got paid for an entire year to start and manage a cleaning company. That is where I learned the rest. By that time, I was burnt out on working for other people and it enfuriated me that I was doing ALL this work for someone else's future. I wanted to work for myself SOOO badly! So, I ended that assignment and spent a year trying to figure out how to make my own business work. Then one day, I realized...WAIT...it's been here all this time. I have all this industry knowledge and I'm not using it. This past March I opened my own company.
I specialize in move-in/move-outs and post-construction cleans. I LOVE the level of detail and not having to deal with individual client's preferences ("yes, move the piles in the office; no, don't move them" "i like my bed make this way; no, that is not the way I like my bed made"). Word is getting out slowly...but I am proud to say that every client I have had has LOVED our work and have become repeat clients.
Oh, yes, I love my life!

Is you Dad still in the business? Do you compete for accounts, or play of each others hand?

I started the Cleaning Business, So I could be in control of the hours I worked. I wanted to be in control of everything concerning the business...I wanted to be my own boss..I did not want to answer to anyone, but myself.. I thought this was the best solution.
BOY, DID I GET A RUDE AWAKING...
In the end..The clients determine how often I work, When I work. It has been a learning experience as well..I'm still learning, and growing..
We have been in business going on three years, But the first year we toyed with the idea of having a cleaning company, Then about 2 yrs ago I got laid off at the Doctor's office where I worked, So I decided then I would work this business, and make it grow, And since I had worked in Home Health Care prior to the Dr's Office I had experience with cleaning people's homes, and having them tell me how they liked things done.. I must say I'm truely happy with my decision to start this business.. Sometimes I have to remind myself how far I have came, and not to give up just because the road may get kinda bumpy...All In All ...It'll work out..
It'll be 2 yrs in Feb, That I've been cleaning full time, So it can only get better.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I keep telling myself that....LOL

I needed to find a business that I could run while hiring others to do the physical work for me. I was searching in the book store and the rest is history.
