For residential cleaning, you can choose to use commercial or vacuums the public buys.
What's your favorite vacuum for carpet and floor? Do you carry 1 or 2 vacuums?
Each of my teams carried 2 vacuums: 1 for carpet and 1 for floors.
For floors I purchase used, inexpensive cannisters and replaced the cord with a 30 or 40ft. cords so we didn't have to replug so often.
For carpet I like the upright with tools on board. This allows you to quickly vacuum behind things as you vacuum each room. My favorite is the Powr-Flite PF14; powerful suction and it lays flat to vacuum under furniture.

The first vacuum I purchased was from Walmart.. Just a cheap dirt devil...It lasted a yr, Then I had to purchase a new one at the first of the year... My helper threw away the filter on accident, So I'm now using another vacuum my mother had... Not sure the name of the last vacuum... So far we have purchased 2 vacuums in our 2 yrs being in business...
I want a DYSON, But can not afford 400-500 for a vacuum at this time..

Supposedly a lot of motels use Orek vacuums. They're very light. Is anybody using them and how are they? I found that by investing in a good commercial vacuum for carpet they lasted a lot longer. And it really helps that they're constructed so well because they really get beat up. Unfortunately, being constructed so well, they also weigh more. I started my business with a Panasonic that I had for personal use. It worked fine but when I purchased my first upright with the tools I went insane! I could vacuum everything, everywhere so easily. My employees told me my vacuum became an extension of my body.

I think i might have posted this somewhere but we do our best to purchase used vacuums , and we do not supply for residential. That is one of my duties, garage sales, thrift stores janitorial clearance, if they turn on and have any suction, SOLD. I also have a good relationship with the local vacuum repair, if we cant fix them ourself, we turn them in for repair. Most of the times I buy a used one for $10 to $15 bucks and put $10.00 into it works good. My thoughts on commercial vacuums are that there usually $70 higher in price for an extra 2-3 inch beater bar.

We used to buy the used vacs also, but found that too much labor time was being wasted on trying to re-align an old beater bar or face plate, etc. A couple of times a stupid cleaner left a burn mark on a carpet from a beater bar that was off kilter, and got hot.

I agree with Quality on picking up staples.
I found that only the commercial vacuums pickup and keep on going. As already stated, you can do some serious damage when something gets stuck and your beater bar starts "burning".
I picked up a lot of referrals because of the type of vacuum I used (really!). Residential clients are so picky; they even notice how deep your "vacuum lines" are! When you purchase new, they last longer before needing repair.
With employees, I had constant vacuum repairs because of the continuous loading and unloading in vehicles. And employees aren't too careful with your equipment.

First vacuum we purchased was a Bissell from Wal-Mart. Motor went in 3 months. Have 3 $100.00 Dirt Devil Ultras now.... one stays with Powr-Flite for carpet cleaning and the other 2 are in the van. I really like them.... great suction and bag-less with 1 filter that is totally cleanable. We are looking to buy their commercial vac's as we replace the old for $50 more each. They are aluminum frame and full 6 year warranty on motor and parts. We just don't have time to buy used and have repaired or repair broken vac's. I try to register all so they will be replaced free. So far so good!
Oh, we also carry a wet/dry Rigid. Works great!

Ya, we got the LARGE Rigid (Home Depot $70.00, gotta love 'em) too. Great cleaning device for the car dealership and residential cleans with 'Arizona Rooms'. Saves time & effort with extra extensions.

Well I gota tell you guy's ! I dont often share my trade secrets, but after reading your post I'am sad. First of all, after selling vacuums for 5 years. I can tell you the truth. Dirt Devil is junk, there made by royal. And bissel is true garbage. Hoover makes the best vacuum on the market. A bagged wind tunnel truly rocks ! "When a vac breaks down give it to the good will and buy a new one" Its a right off for God sake ! I use my vacs for mostly commercial, I'll tell you why. I dont know were you guys are cleaning houses at, but most of my clients, pay a great deal of money for there carpet, and dont really care for having it cleaned with an outside vacuum, that they dont know were it came from. I aways use the customers vacuum when posible, in most cases they perfer it. And it save's you money! P.S visit me at www.checkmatecleaning.com and advertise you cleaning services for free !

Very first vacuum I used when we started was a Dirt Devil, payed like $49 for it at Shopko. Lasted about 3 years with only belt replacement. I would say I more then got my money out of it! Now we pretty much use Panasonic commercial vac's every where. Good price and they last.

One of the best vacuums I have used is the Dyson, but they are a bit pricey. Patti
