I had a lady email today and ask what house cleaners are liable for. She said her house cleaner used Tilex on her black marble and I guess she ruined it. I don't feel like I should get involved in this since I don't know her or what house cleaner she uses. I know the cleaning service should have insurance to cover this but I am not getting involved. What would you do? Patti

This is going to be happening more and more as marble is being put in a lot of houses. There are polishing compounds that can re finish the marble. stonetechpro.com. As seen in previous post, marble is very chemical sensitive. Even a window cleaner with color added (blue, green) can penetrate marble and transfer color. There are special cleaners designed for marble and should be used. They are expensive , but so is marble. Do not cut corners on this. If you are not willing or customer is not willing to pay for it then i would suggest using water only and with soft mop or cloth. As I stated in a post today, I waxed a floor and it turned out bad. Now I am going to strip and wax it at my cost. This is a $1,250 job. If you clean something it is your responsibility to know how.If you are going to be cleaning a lot of marble the IICRC and Stonetechpro has classes in hard floor surfaces. You don't have to take test unless you want certification. The class will cost around $200 which is much cheaper than what damages you may cause when cleaning these. surfaces. Unless the homeowner specifically told the cleaner to use tilex I would say the cleaner is responsible and should pay to have tile re finished.

Dan. The lady that emailed me isn't one of my customers. She has another cleaning company that did this to her marble. She was just asking me for advise. I really don't want to give any advise on this since this is not my customer. Patti

Patti, Not sure if this post was for me, I agree with you. My post was just an opportunity to give some advice and warning on marble and what I thought. Did she ask on your web site email. I would like to know if you are going to reply anything to email. Just in case I get one and am not sure if I want to answer or not.
Also would like to say that when we hear only one side of a story we may not know the whole facts.Divorced people for example. The cleaners story may be that she just did not know what she was doing. Or how about this story. The lady of the house had spilled something all over her marble and really made a mess. It looked like it had etched it. She told me to try tilex on it. I told her I didn't think that was a good idea but she said you can't hurt it anymore than it already is so go ahead and try. Who knows except the cleaner and the client.I'm just saying that sometimes when we see a remark on an email or a post it may not reflect the whole picture.

Dan Since I have an article on my website a lot of people call and email for advise. I decided not to answer this email because I don't know this person or the cleaning company, so I figure I will just stay out of it. The client was wanting to know what house cleaners are liable for. Patti

email her back and refer her to her homeowners insurance. That way you still look like the good guy.

Patti: In my humble opinion, we are not lawyers. This is a legal question, concerning specific performance what the other company was instructed etc. I would answer the e-mail saying something along the lines of I am sorry dear client , however, I cannot a legal opinion as I am not a lawyer. You have now acted professionaly by responding to her, but not committed yourself to an "expert " opinion.
