I recieved this email today. Since I am not a floor specialist, I was wondering if someone else could give some advise on this. Patti
I have recently had to pull up carpeting in a bedroom (due to cats not using a litter box.....they prefer the carpet instead). The smell was getting too much to handle. Anyway, I found a hardware floor beneath the carpeting; however, it is stained and blotchy (due to urine.....it smells, too). How do I clean/refinish it? Do I have to sand it and start all over or can I save it (do mininal work). I am obviously not going to put down new carpeting until the cats leave this earth (by their choice).

using a good enzymatic cleaner should do the trick. Enzymes will eat the odour causing bacteria and disinfect. I have a brand here but since I'm in Ontario it won't do you any good. I have seen a product on TV called Urine go that is the same type of product. This should get rid of the odour. please define hardware floor. Do you mean hardwood? I would suggest a surface sanding maybe with a disc on your swing machine, vacuum, tack cloth, reapplication of urethane finish. Bill (My two cents worth)

Miss Page,
If the Floors are Covered by Carpeting it seems not in Good Condition.
Step One with No Sanding Preparation
1.Mix a Right Amount of Floor Stripper;Dilution Should Be a Little Bit Than What is Used For VCT Stripping.
2.Get A Blue Pad and attached it to a Hard Brush w/ Handle.
3.Bucket with the Stripper You Diluted Dip the Brush and Scrub the Floor Until Floor Becomes Dull. If Needed more Stripper Add a Little Bit More.
4.The Area with Stains Scrub it with Black Pad with a Not So heavy Stripper Diluted Until Stains Clears a Little or All.
5. See if Floors Becomes Dull and Ready for Sealer.
6. Apply Water base Sealer Quick Dry
7.Apply Water Base Floor Finish. When Dry Apply Again. See if Gloss/Semi-Gloos/Satin
But if the Floors are a Really Messed Up. You Might Want To Sub it Out. Especially if it the Wood is Stained. What Color is the Wood?
