Hmm. Did you ever know of their jewelry shop? Did anyone? Sounds fishy to me.
I wouldn't work for someone that wanted to barter, because it could be too risky.
If they're wanting to barter they probably have no money, which is probably why they closed down the jewelry shop to begin with, which makes me wonder what in the heck they're doing with diamonds in the first place.

They owned a Nationally Franchised Store. Apparently they retired and moved up here and the company the husband started working for after he retired is outsourcing to Mexico. So money is probably tight. They are elderly and it is hard for me to turn them down. But I am leary of the idea. I am going to check it out and explain to them I prefer not to barter. I just hate to pass up any possible customer as I am still trying to build up to a full time business. I appreciate all the comments and concerns of anyone with bartering experience.

I'd do it! Not sure if your into jewlery or diamonds and know what your looking at. I wouldn't accept no fakes or anything. but hey, if they wanna hand over some REAL diamonds, i'll be there with bells on.
I cleaned a move-out for a landlord back in 2005. he was a friend of my dads. In exchange he gave me a little dodge pickup truck he had sitting at his house. I didn't really want it, but i knew i could sell it, or take it to the recycle yard and get money from scrapping it. I ended up selling the truck to a friend of mine who needed a work truck for $550. I made $400 off the deal.
So i say go for it!

Bartering is great. Instead of missing out on making money you can barter for something of use. This is better than nothing at all.If it is of something you can sell or use. Recently I bartered to clean at a theater . The job was $1800 but they only budgeted $900, instead of walking away I offered to do the job for $900 cash and $900 in movie tickets. I still made a profit on the cash and love having the tickets to get into any movies we want to see. The point is I could have walked away and not made anything. I didn't . After doing this job I have already had two referrals from it. Same for equipment. I will rent my equipment such as blowers, portable extractor, ozone generator, and so on to my competition if they request. It is better to make money from these then to let them set in a building.

I will rent my equipment such as blowers, portable extractor, ozone generator, and so on to my competition if they request. It is better to make money from these then to let them set in a building. That is a great example. Who wouldn't want free movie tickets? My SO and I would love $900 worth of tickets because we really like to go to the theater (well, I do anyways) but with gas and what they charge for a movie these days, it's better to wait for it to come out on DVD and rent from Netflix. The only reason I would be leary of this one, even if they are elderly, is because they don't currently own the company and there is no way to tell if the diamonds are real or not. Elderly people are easy to feel "sorry" (bad term, I know...) for, but at the same time, it's hard to tell what kind of people will screw you over or not. On the other hand, I can completely understand if they're strapped for cash and need the cleaning. However, wouldn't it be possible for them to have a relative do it instead (unless they're not around)? This way, they can keep or sell their diamonds for money and at the same time, get a "free" cleaning. I don't know because these situations can be tricky if you're unsure and know nothing about these people. If you feel you can trust them, then go for it. If not, explain to them why you can't work for them and move on. -Nicole

I am not sure I trust them. They are in area were I had some problems with customer's. I figure if they own two house they can find some cash. I did refer them to another cleaning company. Several said they do not barter.

It`s one of those bad barter situations, I mean your not a jeweler, they could be cubic zirconias or something . We do alot of bartering, business gift certificates, actaul products from stores, other services. The oppurtunity to get a diamond or diamonds sounds great if they are real.

This does sound like a situation best avoided. But I do admit I like bartering! I like to collect a certain type of art -- portraits of long-deceased American Presidents on green paper. ;D
Cheers!
